I have been reading in the book of Exodus and as I was reading over it yesterday I just didn't want to be reading for the sake of reading that story that I have heard and read many times. I wanted to know how it applied to my life and to this day and age. I prayed and asked the Lord to help me apply this to my life. It was neat what the Lord showed me.
He showed me that many times I am like Pharaoh in that I choose to disobey and ignore His Word. I thought of specific things like love your neighbor as yourself, be merciful for I am merciful, be kind to one another, take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, or whatever is pure, noble, excellent, praiseworthy....think of such things. I know what His Word says, but sometimes I, like Pharaoh, choose to ignore it because I want to do my own thing. I don't want to yield to Him so this is where the application came for me.
Some of the words that talked about Pharaoh's response to God were the following: he harden his heart, "he would not listen to them. Instead, he turned and went into his palace,
and did not take even this to heart" Ex 7:22b-23, his heart was unyielding, ignored the word of the Lord.
I understand that the Lord hardened Pharaohs heart in order to reveal His power, but I believe that Pharaoh's heart was already unyielding toward Him. As the story progresses, Pharaoh's heart became even more hardened toward our Lord and this is what can happen to us as we harden/ignore the Word of the Lord in our lives.
May we walk like Micah where it says,
"He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?"
Micah 6:8
